How to get rid of Acne Scars at Home?

Acne is one of the most common skin problems faced by young adults. Over-the-Counter acne creams that contain salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and niacinamide are proven to be effective acne solutions in getting rid of acne faster. But they can be expensive and bring undesirable side effects to your skin. This has made people look into the natural way of curing acne at home.

WHAT CAUSES ACNE? 

Acne starts when the pores in your skin get clogged with oil, dirt, and dead skin cells. Some even get symptoms like blackheads, whiteheads. To get rid of acne and acne scars, you don’t have to spend lots of money on acne scar treatment and expensive creams and medications. There are different types of acne scars depending on the skin type and its severity. I can hear you asking if there are any home remedies. There are several DIY home remedies that can help you to get rid of acne scars. 

DIY HOME REMEDIES FOR ACNE SCARS: 

There are a few home remedies that can help in getting rid of acne scars if used for a long time consistently. There are; 

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR: Apple cider vinegar is made by fermenting apple cider or the unfiltered juice of apple from pressing it. Just like other vinegar, apple cider vinegar also fights against bacteria. Its organic acid helps acne from scarring. The lactic acid in apple cider vinegar helps in reducing acne scars. 

HOW TO USE IT: Mix one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with three tablespoons of water and apply it to your face with a cotton ball. Let it sit for a few minutes and wash it off after it gets dry. 

NOTE: Don’t forget to dilute apple cider vinegar with water as it can cause burns and irritations on your skin. 

HONEY AND CINNAMON MASK: Honey and Cinnamon can reduce inflammation. Its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties help in getting rid of acne scars. 

HOW TO MAKE HONEY AND CINNAMON MASK: Mix one teaspoon of cinnamon with two tablespoons of honey and apply it to your face. Let it sit for ten minutes. Rinse the mask off and pat it dry. 

TEA TREE OIL: Tea tree oil is known for its ability to fight against dirt and acne-causing bacteria. Tea tree oil has strong antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that help in reducing acne. 

HOW TO USE TEA TREE OIL: Mix one part of tea tree oil with nine parts of water. Dip a cotton ball in the mixture and apply it to the affected area. Let it dry. Wash it off and repeat it twice a day, if needed. 

GREEN TEA: Green tea is known for its antioxidants that give more health benefits while drinking it regularly. Drinking green tea may lower blood sugar and insulin levels. It reduces sebum production and lowers inflammation. Of course, you can buy creams and lotions that contain green tea, but you can make you can prepare your mixtures at home by combining various ingredients to them. 

HOW TO USE IT: Add green tea to boiling water and let it boil for five minutes. Allow the tea to cool and using a cotton ball, apply it to your face. Let it dry and wash it off. 

You can use the remaining tea leaves by mixing them along with a tablespoon of honey and making use of it as a face mask. 

ALOE VERA: Aloe vera is a common home remedy that most people follow. Applying it directly to the acne reduces inflammation and helps in reducing the scar tissue size. Aloe vera is a great moisturizer for your skin.

HOW TO USE IT: Raw aloe vera can be directly applied to the face or the affected area and you can wash it off with lukewarm water after it gets dried. Or you can use aloe vera gels that are available in the markets. 

LEMON JUICE: Lemon juice doesn’t play an active role in getting rid of acne. But it helps in reducing the discoloration caused because of acne and gives an even tone to the skin. 

HOW TO USE IT: Take a cotton swab and dip it in lemon juice. Apply it directly onto the affected area and leave it until it gets dry. Wash it off and moisturize your skin. 

VITAMIN E: Vitamin E controls the production of collagen and elastin in the skin. The Collagen strengthens the skin and may help in giving elasticity and hydration to the skin. Vitamin E oil is easily absorbed into the skin as it is fat-soluble. 

HOW TO USE IT: Take a Vitamin E capsule and apply it all over the affected area. Let it sit for a minimum of ten minutes and then wash it off with warm water. If you’re comfortable with sleeping over oil on your face, you can let Vitamin E for the night and wash it off in the morning. 

POTATO JUICE: Potato removes blemishes and inflammation of the skin. It even helps in getting rid of the puffiness around the eyes. If potato juice is used for a long time continuously, it helps you get clear and glowing skin, reducing the acne scars. 

HOW TO USE IT: There are two ways to use potato juice on your face. You can either grate the potato and apply its juice to the affected area or you can simply cut out a potato slice and scrub its juice all over your face. After applying, let it dry and then wash it off. 

Other than natural home remedies and DIYs, getting rid of acne scars demands various lifestyle changes and a proper skincare routine to get rid of scars faster and effectively.  

EXFOLIATION: Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells from the top layer of the skin. It can both be done using chemical ways and also through natural ways. Exfoliating once in a while is a must as in the absence of exfoliation, it attracts more dirt and bacteria that cause acne and acne scars. If you decide to exfoliate through natural means, you can use coconut oil. 

FOR EXFOLIATION: if you are ready to use coconut oil, then take equal amounts of sugar(or salt) and coconut oil and scrub it all over your face. Now gently scrub your skin with the mixture, but don’t overdo it! You can repeat this process once a day to exfoliate regularly. 

LOW GLYCEMIC DIET: The relationship between acne and following a diet is being a debatable topic for years. But having high glycemic foods regularly results in increased sebum production and raises your blood sugar, which indirectly becomes a reason for acne and acne scars. The high glycemic foods include your favorite: 

  • Pizza, Burger
  • White bread 
  • Soft drinks
  • Pasta 
  • Doughnuts 

Also, low glycemic foods give healthy and glowing skin. Low glycemic foods include;

  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Nuts 

SAY NO TO DAIRY PRODUCTS: Milk and other dairy products contain hormones that can cause hormonal changes which may cause acne. Limiting milk and other dairy products may result in lesser acne on the skin. 

REDUCE STRESS: Though the link between acne and stress is not fully understood, the hormones that are released during stress may result in increased sebum production and indirectly causes inflammation on the skin. There are many ways to reduce stress, few are given below;

  • Sleep regularly for 6 – 8 hours a day
  • Practice yoga
  • Meditate regularly
  •  Do physical activities
  • Talk about your problems to your well-wisher. 

EXERCISE REGULARLY: Exercise promotes healthy blood circulation and the increased blood circulation results in the nourishment of skin cells. Exercising regularly plays an important role in maintaining hormone levels and regulations. Exercise can also lower the stress levels and anxiety of a person.

Acne is a common problem with many different causes. If acne is treated at the right time in the right measures, we can completely overcome it.
