Vitamin E – The uses, side effects and more

Vitamin E is an important fat-soluble antioxidant that has been used to protect skin from solar radiation. Its powerful antioxidants help to hold back your youthful skin by making almost all the skin cells from getting damaged by dirt, free radicals, etc. Vitamin E not only gives numerous benefits to your skin but also to your hair and body. It has various health benefits if consumed regularly. It is present in different fruits and vegetables that we include in our daily diet. 

BENEFITS OF VITAMIN E:

STABILITY: 

Vitamin E, a naturally occurring acid in fruits and vegetables becomes slowly oxidized when exposed to air. Also, products containing Vitamin C and E as an ingredient compromise stability as soon as it is exposed to air. When used along with ferulic acid in the right ratio, it improves the chemical stability of the vitamins and doubles its efficiency on your skin. 

ACNE:

Usage of Vitamin E along with Vitamin C and Zinc helps in enhancing the antioxidant properties and fastening wound healing. It not only helps in wound healing but also in treating acne and in getting rid of acne scars faster. 

MELASMA:  

Though Vitamin E alone has shown minimal efficacy in treating melasma, it has been shown to cause depigmentation if combined with other Vitamins. Vitamin E increases the efficacy by reducing melanocyte membranes and giving the result of fastening depigmentation. 

IS IT SAFE TO USE?

It is safe for people in most cases. Only those patients with coagulation disorders and those who include anticoagulant medications are instructed to avoid Vitamin E supplements intake as it may increase its severity and increase the bleeding tendencies. 

SIDE EFFECTS: 

Most people do not get any side effects if take a recommended amount of Vitamin e supplements. If they tend to intake a higher amount of supplements than recommended, some side effects like nausea, diarrhoea, fatigue, weakness, blurred vision and even rashes may occur in some rare cases. 

VITAMIN E INTAKE DURING PREGNANCY: 

Though adverse effects haven’t been observed even in intake during higher intake of Vitamin E supplements during pregnancy, it’s always recommended to use only small doses of Vitamin E supplements. There is no record of documenting adverse fatal effects due to Vitamin E supplement intake.

VITAMIN E DOSAGE RECOMMENDED: 

The recommended intake of Vitamin E  is 6 – 10 mg and it is also based on the level of tocopherol (various compounds in fruits and vegetables that constitute Vitamin E, which is important in the stabilization of cell membrane). An average healthy adult may take up to four years to fully consume body stores of Vitamin E if taken on a normal diet. 

TOPICAL VITAMIN E IN DERMATOLOGY:  

Topical Vitamin E has become a popular treatment for several skin disorders like acne scars, dark spots, and hyperpigmentation. Its antioxidant properties have the potential to increase collagen production. Most the over-the-counter products contain 0.5% – 1.0% of Vitamin E in it. 

FOODS THAT HAVE VITAMIN E NATURALLY:

Several fruits, vegetables, and even nuts that we intake daily have Vitamin E in them. It includes almonds, peanuts, mango, bell pepper, and broccoli. It is better to intake Vitamin E through our daily diet and through the skincare products than to consume it in medications if it’s not necessary.
